So
if any of you Native Foodies remember Holladay Allen, our Marketing Manager on
Sabbatical, she is pretty much the queen of vegan tattoos. Her legs and arms
are totally decked out in gorgeous body art and she has a story for each of
them.

Personally,
I’m too afraid of needles to get one done (and my mom would kill me), but it
seems like a wildly popular thing to do in the vegan community. Apparently most
inks are made from metals and therefore vegan, but there’s something called
“bone black” where the ink’s coloring comes from charcoal or from burnt animal
bones. Eek! The glycerin in the ink might also be derived from animal fat. So
if you’re going to get one, be sure to bring your own ink or to ask the parlor
what ink they use. Here’s a list of vegan inks from vegansociety.com.

And
here are some cool veggie-themed tattoos that I found all over the Internet! If
you’re going for a veg tattoo, there are a few directions you can take.

There’s
the simple “labeling” approach, where you just ink what you are in one word. If
you’re going this way, you’ve got to be really, really committed to your diet.

I
like this first one because it’s simple and pretty. It was done at Scapegoat
Tattoos in Portland:

This
identifier is a little more hidden, and I think the design is unique but still simple.

Then
there are tats that pay tribute to food, like this really cute cupcake one on
Vegan Marks. I have noticed a positive correlation between vegans and people
who like cupcakes. Good thing there are TONS of vegan cupcake recipes out
there! Not to mention the carrot and cream cheese cupcake at Native Foods
  =)

Some
people get a little weirder with their food tributes, like this Soy Stick
tattoo, also from Vegan Marks.

This
tattoo-ed blogger is really, really in love with her veggies. I guess she never
forgets to eat them!

Here’s
a pretty adorable couple’s tattoo featuring my all-time favorite food, the
avocado:

And
just out of curiosity, I investigated the tattoo situation of our favorite celebrity
vegans.
Alicia Silverstone doesn’t have one, but her husband of three
years Chris Jarecki does, and it’s really cute!

Toby
Maguire does not have one, nor does Ellen Degeneres. But Lea Michele does! And
hers is a leaf, which sounds pretty green to me!

And
this last one belongs to celebrity vegan Russell Brand. He decked out his arm
in this war prayer to signify his battle with drug addiction. He’s clean now,
and living a very pure and healthy life (diet especially). Great job Russell!
